Inlays and Onlays

Our teeth suffer from damage, such as decay, chips or cracks that are too severe to be treated with fillings but not severe enough to need a crown. Instead, our dentists may use Inlays and Onlays, instead of full-coverage crowns.

These forms of indirect fillings restore mild to moderate decay, cracks or chips on teeth. They can be made from either porcelain, composite resin or gold. Inlays are bonded to shallow cavities on the tip of the affected tooth. During the procedure, the bonding material is placed in the middle of the tooth and extended to the cusps. Onlays are used for more deep and larger cavities.

Although these indirect restoration types are expensive, they are much stronger and more durable than traditional fillings. During the first appointment, the dentist cleans the tooth and puts a temporary filling. Next, he or she takes the impression of your teeth, which is used to prepare the Inlay or Onlay. The durable materials used offer a wide range of colours to blend with the patient’s natural teeth. The Inlay/Onlay is prepared in the lab and bonded on the affected teeth during your next appointment.

Inlays and Onlays offer a natural look, fit perfectly and are durable. Usually, you will require at least two visits to the dentist for the procedure. Contact us today for more information or to book your appointment.
