Root Canal Therapy As An Easy Fix For Teeth Infections

by | Dec 11, 2020 | General Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Root Canal Therapy

Your teeth have multiple layers. The hard surfaces you see are just the exterior, but the inner layers have soft tissues. Once these tissues get infected, you might need to undergo root canal therapy for tooth pain relief.

Getting teeth infections

The center of your teeth contains the pulp, which is a collection of soft tissues. The pulp makes your teeth grow through its nerves, tissues and blood vessels. Tooth decay and other oral issues can cause infections or damage to the pulp in your teeth.

The pulp has no means to repair itself once it gets injured. If you have a chipped tooth, bacteria can enter the soft tissues. The bacteria can worsen the injury to the pulp, and this leads to infection.

At this rate, you may feel a toothache that throbs against your jawbone. The ligaments that surround your teeth can swell, thus causing loose teeth.

An injured pulp can cause discomfort, especially when you are chewing your food. Eating food that is too hot or cold can also make your teeth sensitive. Inflamed tissues cause pain, and you need to see a dental professional right away once this happens.

What to expect from a root canal therapy

Your endodontist, who specializes in treating the pulp, will take charge of your root canal treatment. They see to it that the infection doesn’t spread and cause further damage to your teeth.

Your dentist will place you under local anesthesia during the root canal therapy. Many patients describe that the procedure is painless, more or less like a tooth extraction. All credits go to the expertise of your dentist and the advancements in technology.

Procedure

Here are the things you can expect from your oral surgeon during your dental surgery.

  1. Your dentist will clean the center of the damaged tooth to remove the injured pulp. A small hole through the tooth surface will allow them to reach the pulp using a tiny dental file.
  2. Once your damaged nerve tissue is removed, your dentist will use a rubber-like material to replace it. The tiny hole is sealed with an adhesive cement to ensure that no bacteria can enter the replaced tissue.
  3. By this time, your tooth becomes fragile because of the absence of its pulp. The loss of inner tissues exposes your tooth to brittleness. Your dentist might suggest adding a dental crown or filling to strengthen your tooth.

You won’t be able to chew or bite using the repaired tooth until you had your dental crown or filling.

Just like the usual teeth extraction, root canal therapy typically takes one session. However, you may need to have more appointments if there are large or multiple infections. Consult your Aurora dentist if you ever feel discomfort that may be caused by teeth infections.
