Some patients grind their teeth when they feel stressed or even asleep. While teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is common in both adults and children, if frequent, it severely damages your teeth and jaw. Moreover, it may also cause temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This condition is characterized by abnormal clenching and grinding of the teeth, either when the patient is awake (awake bruxism) or asleep (sleep bruxism).
Its symptoms are generally mild, that’s why most people are unaware of it. However, look out to any of the following symptoms that may hint you are grinding your teeth:
If you experience any or all of the above symptoms, it’s time to talk to your dentist. If left untreated, the condition may worsen and lead to fracture and loss of teeth as well as issues with your jaw structure and hearing ability. At Dana Dental, we may recommend using night guards to help you control your teeth clenching habit. Depending on the cause of your teeth grinding, we may also suggest stress management therapy or counselling if it’s because of stress.
Our dentist will fit a custom-made protective mouth guard to help reduce the constant and forcible gnashing and clenching of your teeth. This will also prevent any damages to your jaw. In severe cases of damage to the teeth and jaw, the dentist needs to reconstruct all your teeth.
